FMCSA updates SMS Methodology process

Acute, critical violations added to collection software

Posted July 11, 2019

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued an update to its Safety Measurement System (SMS) Methodology.

Version 3.10 of the SMS Methodology incorporates acute and critical violations to further align the SMS with FMCSA’s roadside inspection collection software and other systems.

Changes include the addition of 11 violations, the removal of six violations, and the change of one violation from critical to acute.

FMCSA also updated the Yes/No flags in the Violation in the DSMS (Driver Safety Measurement System) column. These updates will allow for the Vehicle Maintenance Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs) to align with current Intermodal Equipment Provider policy.

The SMS changes took effect February 22, 2019.
