EPA lowers limits on lead dust on floors, window sills

EPA has issued a final rule revising the dust-lead hazard standards (DLHS) from 40 micrograms (μg) of lead in dust per square foot (ft2) to 10 μg/ft2 on floors and from 250 μg/ft2 to 100 μg/ft2 on window sills. The Agency says the tighter standards will protect children from the harmful effects of lead exposure, and will help property owners, lead paint professionals, and government agencies identify lead hazards in residential paint, dust, and soil. The standards apply in most pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities.
The rule also finalizes EPA’s proposal to make no change to the definition of lead-based paint (LBP) because it says insufficient information exists to support a change.
The final rule takes effect January 6, 2020.
