Midwest states launch truck parking initiative

Road message boards, phone apps, websites to disseminate information

Posted January 16, 2019

Several midwest states have launched a parking management system this month to help drivers find safe spots for rest breaks or to sleep.

The Mid America Association of State Transportation Officials created the parking system to help drivers monitor parking availability while staying in compliance with federally mandated hours-of-service rules.

The system provides drivers with parking updates through roadside message boards, smartphone applications, and traveler information websites.

Participating states are Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

The lack of available and safe parking spaces has continuously ranked high on the American Transportation Research Institute’s list of industry concerns in recent years.
