Research indicates demand for CMVs, trailers remains high

Orders down slightly in December, but compared to record levels

Posted January 25, 2019

Demand for heavy commercial motor vehicles remains strong despite a recent slower stretch, ACT Research said recently.

While orders for Class 8 truck and trailer orders were down in December, a 10-month backlog of orders for trucks and trailers indicate a bright future for the industry as 2019 begins, ACT said.

ACT said it based the prediction on three considerations:

  1. Freight rate markdown is down from record levels;
  2. The addition of new technologies, such as better fuel economy and safety technologies, and the emergence of automated manual transmissions; and
  3. Increased demand being generated for drop-and-hook operations to keep drivers (and freight) moving.
