Calling all opinions: FMCSA comment period extended
September 12, 2024
Don’t miss out! The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has extended its comment period for the public to help determine which existing guidance documents should be revised or removed. Comments were previously required by September 12, but the deadline was extended 14 days to September 26.
What to review
The FMCSA is reviewing its existing guidance documents to determine which should be updated or removed. This mandatory review period requires the FMCSA to invite public comment every five years for input on which existing documents need attention. This review period’s notice of review was published on August 13.
Public comments are invited to determine whether the existing guidance documents are or are not:
- Clear,
- Consistent,
- Appropriately enforced, and
- Still necessary.
Why the extension?
The comment period was extended because the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) requested a 60-day extension on August 26, claiming that 30 days was not enough time for the public to leave meaningful feedback. FMCSA says it will also consider late-filed comments to the extent that it can.
Public comments and the 1,300 guidance documents up for review may be viewed at https://www.regulations.gov/docket/FMCSA-2024-0208/document.
