CVSA releases results of 2022 Brake Safety Week

November 15, 2022

Each year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) conducts Brake Safety Week in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This year’s event took place August 21-27, 2022. Over 38,000 commercial vehicles were inspected in the United States, Canada, and Mexico over the seven-day annual initiative.

During this year’s event, inspectors placed 13.3 percent of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) in North America out of service (OOS) for critical brake violations.

More than 90 percent of this year’s inspections took place in the United States. Out of the 34,402 CMVs inspected in the U. S., 13.6 percent were placed OOS with brake violations.

For those CMV inspections outside of the United States, brake OOS rates were:

  • 17.8 percent for Canada, and
  • 2.5 percent for Mexico.

Year-over-year, the U. S.’s brake violation rate decreased slightly from 13.5 percent in 2021.

This year, inspections focused specifically on brake hosing and tubing. Only 3.1 percent of U. S. CMVs were placed out of service for brake hose chafing violations, but this is an increase from 2021’s critical brake hose chafing violation rate of 3 percent.
