CVSA posts the results of International Roadcheck 2022

On May 17-19, 2022, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspectors performed 58,287 inspections in Canada, Mexico, and the United States as part of this year’s International Roadcheck. This is a significant increase over the approximately 40,000 inspections performed in 2021.

The top out-of-service violations in each country were similar, with brakes, tires, and lights taking four of the top five spots in all three countries.

False logs made up 45 percent of the driver out-of-service violations in the United States, and “wrong license class” violations made up almost 35 percent. In Canada, the top driver violation was hours of service, which was the overwhelming reason for driver out-of-service violations at 76.3 percent. Inspectors in Mexico did not conduct driver inspections.

The focus of this year’s International Roadcheck was wheel ends. In the U.S., almost 24 percent of out-of-service violations concerned wheel ends. In Canada, that number was 12 percent and in Mexico, the number was over 54 percent.

The overall North American vehicle out-of-service rate was 22.8 percent; 6.4 percent of drivers were placed out-of-service. Last year’s out-of-service rates were 16.5 and 5.3 percent, respectively.
