Be prepared as the height of hurricane season approaches
August 17, 2023
Though the current hurricane season has been relatively quiet, it’s important to be prepared as the height of the season approaches. Both OSHA and NIOSH have provided resources to help emergency responders, recovery workers, and employers prepare in advance for anticipated weather disasters.
For employers, planning (having an evacuation plan or Emergency Action Plan in place) helps to ensure workers can get to a safe place if a hurricane affects the area. Employers should also:
- Keep emergency supply kits in shelter locations, and
- Provide training to ensure workers know what to do in an emergency.
Disaster site management, hazard assessment, and access to personal protective equipment (PPE) allow emergency responders and recovery workers to better protect themselves and prevent injuries and illnesses once rescue, recovery, and clean-up activities begin.
Additional resource information on hurricane preparedness can be found at cdc.gov and osha.gov.
