Stand-up for Grain Engulfment Prevention Week set for April 9-13

National campaign designed to prevent injuries and deaths in grain handling industry

Posted April 9, 2018

A new safety stand-up campaign intends to raise national awareness on grain engulfment and other hazards in the grain handling industry. Stand-Up for Grain Engulfment Prevention Week, sponsored in partnership by OSHA and the National Grain and Feed Association, is scheduled for April 9-13, 2018. The partners, in cooperation with the American Feed Industry Association and the Great Plains Chapter of the Grain Elevator and Processing Society, are offering information, guidance, and access to resources to protect grain handling employees.

Stand-Up for Grain Engulfment Prevention Week is meant to encourage industry leaders, farmers, and workers to use best practices and effective safety and health programs.

The campaign includes a webinar on April 10 that will feature ways to prevent injuries and fatalities from grain bin engulfment. OSHA and its partners will also offer toolbox talks on lockout/tagout, fall prevention, and grain handling. In addition, a University of Texas-Arlington website provides information on hosting or participating in local stand-up events along with education resources for the grain handling industry.

OSHA requires employees in the grain handling industry to be trained on grain-handling hazards and have the necessary tools to ensure they enter and leave a grain bin or silo safely.
