Falls are a major issue in construction and often lead to safety violations. This is often a result of teams lacking the right gear and training. Falls are the top cause of death in construction, making up over 35% of all fatalities. The second leading cause, being struck by objects, contributes to nearly 10% of the total.

Given the risk of death from falling, fall protection is required when working at heights of 6 feet (1.8 meters) or more above a lower level. This rule applies to all United States construction jobsites, according to the "Fall Protection" requirements. In Canada, fall protection is required for work at 9.8 feet (3 meters) or above, or at lower heights with risks like machinery, drowning, or shifting materials below. Additional provincial regulations may also apply.

There are four hazards employers should focus on based on their high injury and fatality rates. These include:

  • Falls
  • Struck-by
  • Caught-between
  • Electrocution

This training is designed to help construction workers identify and reduce fall hazards. It will help them prevent accidents and maintain safety in various environments with elevated platforms, openings, and potentially falling objects.

After completing this training, learners will be able to:

  • Identify potential fall hazards on job sites and methods to eliminate and prevent them
  • Recognize different types of fall protection and appropriate scenarios for their use
  • Explain how to properly select, inspect, use, and store fall protection equipment
