A temporary trip permit is needed when traveling to a state in which the vehicle is not registered under the International Registration Plan (IRP).

If ordering during business hours (5:00 am – 11:00 pm CST), trip permits are typically issued in 1 hour and are sent to you by email or fax.

When traveling to a state in which a vehicle does not hold an International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) decal and license, a temporary fuel permit is needed.

If a vehicle is oversize or overweight, a temporary permit is needed. This authorizes movement per vehicle configurations and weight. There are many determining factors when reviewing oversize/overweight requirements. In most cases, if the load is divisible, you do not qualify for an oversize or overweight permit. The bullets below are general guidelines.

A permit may be required if:

• Overall height exceeds 13'6"
• Overall width exceeds 8'6"
• Trailer length exceeds 48'
• Overall weight exceeds 80,000 pounds

1. When Are Permits Required?
   • International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)
     Applies to all vehicles with:
     • 2 axles weighing over 26,000 pounds or
     • Vehicles with 3 or more axles regardless of weight, traveling in two or more states.
     Note: When traveling to a state in which a vehicle does not hold an IFTA decal and license, a temporary fuel permit is needed.
    
   • International Registration Plan (IRP)
     Applies to all vehicles with:
     • 2 axles weighing over 26,000 pounds or
     • Vehicles with 3 or more axles regardless of weight, traveling in two or more states.
     Note: When traveling to a state in which a vehicle is not registered under IRP, a temporary trip permit is needed.
    
   • Mileage Permit
     When operating in KY, NM, NY, and OR, a vehicle may require a mileage permit in addition to fuel and trip permits.

2. How quickly can I get my permits?
   Our average turnaround time for fuel or trip permits is one hour. For oversize and overweight permits, the average turnaround time is approximately three to four hours. All oversize/overweight applications must be reviewed by the applicable state, which may cause some delays.

3. What are state provisional sheets?
   When referencing oversize and overweight permitting, state provisional sheets are general state rules regarding transportation of an oversize or overweight load. Certain states require you to attach provisional sheets to your permit. Below are the states that require provisional sheets to be attached.    Note: you may also have restrictions outlined on your oversize/overweight permit which must be followed. Be sure to read those carefully.
