Certified Reflective Safety Vests

Certified high-visibility vests are required to adhere to garment design requirements established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) under ANSI/ISEA 107‑2020 — learn more about ANSI standards.

J. J. Keller® SAFEGEAR® Class 2 and Class 3 vests are best for working environments that pose a great risk to workers, including those who work on a roadway and may need to turn their attention away from vehicles moving near them. Type R vests are appropriate for workers who are exposed to roadway traffic and those who work in an environment with moving equipment/vehicles. Class 2 safety vests are rated for working around vehicles and equipment with speeds up to 50mph, while Class 3 safety vests are rated for work around vehicles and equipment at speeds over 50mph.

In addition to ANSI-certified vests, CSA Z96-compliant safety vests meet Canadian Standards Association safety standards. These vests have reflective taping forming an X on the back.

Non-Certified Reflective Safety Vests

Non-certified safety vests are a good choice for situations where visibility is important and desired, but not mandated by OHSA or ANSI standards. A non-certified vest is appropriate for non-complex, low-hazard environments. Examples of the types of workers that would benefit from wearing a non-certified vest include those in warehouse or distribution and package delivery, as well as parking lot attendants and related jobs.

Pro Tip – Breakaway Vests

Factory employees are typically prohibited from wearing loose-fitting clothing or jewelry because it could get caught in moving machine parts and pull the worker into the danger zone. You might have a similar hazard if your workers must wear high-visibility vests around moving equipment on your jobsite. You can’t work safely without the vests, and there are benefits to the vests’ loose-fitting design. The best solution is to use a breakaway vest. A breakaway vest easily and safely breaks away if the vest becomes caught on equipment; breaking away at the front, the right and left shoulder, and the right and left sides. Shop breakaway vests.
