OSHA reminds retailers to protect workers during holiday shopping season
November 25, 2024
With the holiday season quickly approaching, OSHA reminds employers to protect workers by ensuring they are trained to recognize and prevent hazards.
Warehouse, delivery, and retail workers are at increased risk for injuries and illnesses during the holidays due to higher volumes of work to meet consumer demand. OSHA offers nine tips to keep workers safe:
- Train workers on safe work practices in a language they speak and understand.
- Provide hands-on training for young and new workers on properly using equipment.
- Wear bright, visible clothing (delivery services and warehousing workers).
- Prevent injuries by properly stacking materials and making sure workers stand clear when doors are opened for unloading.
- Create a detailed and flexible staffing plan to help reduce workplace stress.
- Prepare an emergency plan (when large crowds are expected).
- Make sure entrance and exit signs are visible.
- Encourage workers to report any safety and health concerns.
- Remember that seasonal workers have the same rights as full-time workers.
Employers can find additional resources and safety guidance on OSHA’s website.
