OSHA adds new heat illness prevention resources
June 12, 2024
With summer approaching, outdoor workers will be subjected to working in higher temperatures. As part of its Heat Illness Prevention campaign, OSHA has added several resources to help keep workers safe.
The new resources include a wallet card, brochure, and checklist that educate employers and workers on heat hazards and what to do in case of emergency.
The wallet card lists signs and symptoms of heat stress and information on how to respond. Guidance includes:
- Calling 911,
- Cooling the person immediately with water or ice,
- Removing extra clothing,
- Giving the affected person cool water to drink, and
- Remaining with the person until help arrives.
The pocket-sized brochure includes information on risk factors for heat-related illnesses and first aid procedures, while the checklist helps employers identify possible heat hazards and form a heat-related illness prevention plan.
Additional information and resources can be found at osha.gov.
