OSHA Quick Card addresses common hazards in poultry industry

Safe work practices, basic tips available in English and Spanish

Posted August 20, 2018

Poultry plant workers encounter many safety and health hazards, including dangerous equipment, slippery surfaces, high noise levels, repetitive motions, and hazardous chemicals (including ammonia that is used as a refrigerant). Workers also can be exposed to biological hazards associated with handling live birds.

A new OSHA Quick Card lists precautions to help workers prevent injury or illness:

  • Make sure machines are properly guarded before beginning work;
  • Turn off equipment during cleaning or maintenance;
  • Keep surfaces clean;
  • Wear protective clothing;
  • Report early signs of repetitive motion injuries to management.

The Quick Card is available in English and Spanish.
