Where in the hazmat regulations can I find the ERG?
The ERG is not regulations, so it is not found in the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR). The ERG is a guidebook developed by DOT for first responders (police, firefighters) to use when they first arrive at a hazmat incident.
Why do I need the Emergency Response Guide to accompany my shipping papers when transporting hazmat?
The hazmat regulations found in §172.602 require most hazardous materials shipments to have emergency response information on or with the shipping papers. The ERG is one of several ways that may be used to satisfy these requirements.
