NIOSH illustrates how to properly wear your respirator

Picture promotes proper personal protection practices

Posted February 12, 2018

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently added a new infographic on respiratory protection to its National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory webpage. The image is designed to be used as an educational tool, and NIOSH encourages employers to download, print, and use it to promote proper respiratory protection program practices.

The infographic describes the three key factors that make a respirator effective. The respirator must:

  1. Be donned correctly and worn for the duration of exposure.
  2. Fit snugly on the user’s face with no gaps between the user’s skin and the respirator seal.
  3. Capture more than 95 percent of the particles in the air that pass through it.
