Brake safety week begins September 11

Non-compliant vehicles will be placed out-of-service

Posted July 15, 2016

The annual brake safety inspection campaign will take place September 11-17, 2016. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) event will focus on brake system compliance and is intended to enhance commercial motor vehicle brake safety across North America.

Inspections of large trucks and buses by law enforcement will include checks for:

  • Brake-system components to identify loose or missing parts,
  • Air or hydraulic fluid leaks,
  • Worn linings, pads, drums or rotors, and
  • Other faulty brake-system components.

Inspectors will also measure pushrod stroke where applicable.

Defective or out-of-adjustment brakes will result in the vehicle being placed out-of-service. Brake violations represented 43 percent, the largest percentage of all out-of-service violations cited during Operation Airbrake’s companion Roadcheck inspection spree in 2015.
