HazCom rule reaches OMB for review

Could be published within the next 90 to 120 days

Posted October 19, 2023

OSHA sent its hazard communication (HazCom) final rule to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review on October 11. The review generally takes 90 to 120 days, at which point the rule is published in the Federal Register. This likely means an early 2024 publication date.

The final rule would align the HazCom standard with the seventh revision of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The current standard was aligned in 2012 with the third revision of the GHS.

OSHA issued a proposed HazCom rule in February 2021 and held a series of stakeholder meetings in September 2021.
