SBA to host business disaster preparedness webinars

September is National Preparedness Month

Posted September 4, 2015

According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), nearly 70 percent of all U.S. businesses will lose power at one point in the next 12 months. Disasters like floods, hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes, and earthquakes are a harsh and frequent reality for much of the country. National Preparedness Month is designed to raise awareness and encourage Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies.

To help businesses prepare, the SBA is hosting a series of free webinars in September. The series is presented in collaboration with FEMA’s Ready Campaign during National Preparedness Month. The theme this year is “Don’t wait. Communicate. Make your emergency plan today.” These 30-minute webinars will be presented at 2 p.m. EDT each Wednesday in September:

  • September 9: “The Keystone to Disaster Recovery: Communications”
  • September 16: “Recover from the Most Likely Disaster: Power Outage”
  • September 23: “Protect Your Most Valuable Asset: Prepare Your Employees”
  • September 30: “If You Do Nothing Else this Year…” Simple tips to build your organization’s resilience.

The SBA is encouraging all businesses to create a disaster preparedness plan this month. Having a business continuity plan is essential to establishing a successful and resilient small business. The cost of creating a disaster preparedness plan is small compared to the financial losses that may occur if there’s no plan in place.
