ACGIH® ratifies 2019 TLVs® and BEIs®

Comments accepted on proposals until May 31

Posted February 5, 2019

The ACGIH® Board of Directors announced it has ratified the 2019 Threshold Limit Values (TLVs®) for Chemical Substances and Physical Agents and Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs®). In addition, the Board approved recommendations for additions to the Notice of Intended Changes (NIC).

TLVs and BEIs are not designed to be used as standards, but as guidelines used by professionals trained in the practice of industrial hygiene. The health-based values are established by committees that review existing published and peer-reviewed literature in various scientific disciplines. Based on the available information, ACGIH forms a conclusion on what level of exposure the typical worker can experience without adverse health effects.

The NIC is made up of those substances and physical agents for which:

  • A limit/BEI® is proposed for the first time;
  • A change in the value/index is proposed;
  • Retention as an NIC is proposed; or
  • Withdrawal of documentation and adopted values is proposed.

In each case, the proposals should be considered trial values while they are on the NIC.

ACGIH will accept comments on the NIC and welcomes suggestions for substances to be considered for TLVs/BEIs, such as those found on the current Under Study List. Substantiating evidence in the form of peer-reviewed literature should accompany all comments or suggestions.

ACGIH recommends TLV and BEI users read its Statement of Position Regarding the TLVs® and BEIs®, which provides information on the proper usage of the values.

ACGIH is a charitable scientific organization that advances occupational and environmental health.
