Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) FAQs

What is an ERG?

ERG stands for Emergency Response Guidebook, which is a guidebook developed by DOT for first responders (police, firefighters) to use when they first arrive at a hazmat incident.

Where in the hazmat regulations can I find the ERG?

The ERG is not regulations, so it is not found in the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).

Why do I need the Emergency Response Guide to accompany my shipping papers when transporting hazmat?

The hazmat regulations require most hazardous materials shipments to have emergency response information on or with the shipping papers. The ERG is one of several ways that may be used to satisfy the emergency response information requirements in §172.602.

Do the hazmat regulations require the newest edition of the ERG?

No. The Hazardous Materials Regulations do not require the use of an ERG. However, PHMSA has clarified that the most up-to-date emergency response information should be used to satisfy §172.602. The 2020 ERG contains the most up-to-date emergency response information.

Can someone use an old ERG to meet the emergency response information requirements specified in Section 172.602?

Yes, if the ERG meets the requirements found in §172.602 and contains the most up-to-date emergency response information for the shipment.

Can someone be fined for not using the newest Emergency Response Guidebook?

No, as long as the ERG they are using meets the requirements of §172.602 and contains the most up-to-date emergency response information for the shipment.

Is there a grace period for switching from an old ERG to the newest version?

No, switching is not mandatory.

Why should I use the 2020 ERG?

  • It contains the most up-to-date emergency response information;
  • It contains new shipping names and ID numbers, not in previous editions;
  • It eliminates the hassle of checking previous editions for up-to-date response information for a shipment;
  • It eliminates the worry of not having the correct response information;
  • It's the easiest way to comply with §172.602; and
  • Enforcement expects to see the most current edition, 2020 ERG.

When is the next edition of the ERG expected to be available?

The newest edition will ship in Spring 2020.
