Hearing Conservation Services

Noise Monitoring & Assessment
OSHA requires that employees be placed in a hearing conservation program if they are exposed to average noise levels of 85 dB or greater during an 8-hour workday. To determine if your exposures are at or above this level, J. J. Keller can monitor your work environments for you. Upon conclusion of the noise monitoring service, you will receive an exposure report and recommendations which may include management controls, engineering controls or personal protective equipment (PPE). Noise monitoring can be done remotely, or as an on-site service. Our clients will commonly combine on-site monitoring with on-site training.

Factors that suggest exposures may exceed threshold include:

  • Employee complaints about noise
  • Indications that employees are losing their hearing
  • Conditions where normal conversation is difficult due to noise

Policy & Procedures – Development & Review
You can rely on J. J. Keller to develop or review policies for noise monitoring. If you utilize PPE as a control for noise exposures, we can create a policy around employee PPE use. Proper policies and procedures set the foundation for protecting your workforce.

Training Program – Development & Review
Employee training plays a critical role in protecting against noise exposure. Workers who understand the background and reasons behind company hearing conservation programs are more apt to comply with required PPE use and take audiometric tests. If workers are subject to 85 dB or greater, employers are required to train annually on the effects of noise; the purpose, advantages and disadvantages of various types of hearing protectors; the selection, fit and care of protectors; and the purpose and procedures of audiometric testing. Experienced J. J. Keller consultants can provide initial and annual training for supervisors and employees. Our clients often combine on-site training with noise monitoring services.

Medical Surveillance – Program Management
We can help you efficiently track and manage your hearing conservation program testing and records.

  • Pre-employment/initial testing
