Driver Qualification & Hiring
There’s more to being a professional driver than just getting a CDL. Drivers have to meet certain requirements before you can allow them to drive any kind of commercial motor vehicle (CMV), even those CMVs that don't require a CDL..
General qualifications have to be met and up-to-date driver qualification files, as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR), must be on record. These files are made up of the required employment forms you must be aware of when hiring a driver.
FMCSRs state that driver qualification files need to include:
- Medical examiner's certificate (sometimes called a DOT medical card or wallet card)
- Application for employment
- Road test form and certificate
- Motor vehicle record from state(s)
- Safety Performance Hidtory inquiries
- And several other employment forms
Driver qualification files must be kept by employers for the duration of a driver’s employment, and for 3 years after.
