When conducting hazmat training,
Dan Burke (standing at left) has his trainees take a quiz in the back
of the workbook to give him a feel for how well they've understood the
material.
When Dan Burke conducts
his hazmat training sessions, there are two things he always has on hand:
donuts and Kellers HazMat Training Basics kit.
As Manager of Safety
and Compliance for Grane Transportation Lines, Ltd., a warehousing, distribution
and leasing company based in Chicago, Dan has learned that donuts go a
long way toward attracting employees to the training. But its Kellers
HazMat Training Basics that goes the rest of the way to
provide his employees with the information they need to work safely with
hazardous materials.
I
like the fact that the kit is basic. Everything is in plain English. At
the end of the training session, my employees understand key hazmat concepts.
Since moving from
dispatch operations to safety, Dan (a 25-year veteran of the transportation
industry) has used the kit to train over 100 employees ranging from drivers
to dock workers to office personnel. Because about 10% of the loads Grane
transports involve hazardous materials, hazmat training is a key concern
of Dans one that is eased by using the kit.
Two parts of the kit
Dan especially appreciates are the video and the employee workbooks. He
likes how the video shows situations his employees can relate to and helps
create group discussion. He also likes the way the workbook spells everything
out and how it allows his employees to take key information with them
after the training session.
