Former J. J. Keller VP Shaw receives SIIA Innovation Award

Accolade honors content innovator who has made profound impact on B2B publishing industry

Webb A. Shaw, the retired Vice President of Editorial Resources at J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc., received the Peter Jackson Innovation Award from the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) on June 15 at SIIA’s annual conference in Washington, D.C.

The Peter Jackson Innovation Award honors the late Thomson Reuters Vice President and Chief Scientist and his profound impact on the business-to-business publishing industry. Jackson was also an active board member of SIIA, the principal trade association for the software and digital content industries. The association represents approximately 800 member companies worldwide.

“SIIA created the Peter Jackson Innovation Award to recognize individuals who are an inspiration to the entire information industry,” said Michael Marchesano, Vice President and Managing Director of SIIA’s Content & Information Services Division as well as its Association of Business Information & Media Companies Division. “Webb Shaw is an innovator, has had a profound impact on the B2B publishing industry, is generous and inspirational to the people around him, and has been a great contributor to SIIA and the SIIA community.”

Shaw joined J. J. Keller in May 1992, and for more than two decades oversaw the core content-development functions for this nationally recognized safety and regulatory compliance resource firm. He retired in January 2015. During his tenure, Shaw championed development of J. J. Keller’s online content-based, subscription services, including the 2000 launch of KellerOnline®, the first online safety management tool. He also advocated implementation (2004) and subsequent build-outs of the company’s publishing content management system; and development and launch (1994) of the Keller-Soft® line of content-based software tools. For more than 20 years, he provided senior-management leadership of intellectual property protection and licensing. He also served SIIA in various roles, including Content Division Board member and chairman.

“It is an honor to be selected for this award. I can’t think of a better way to cap off a career,” said Shaw. “It is also humbling because I could not have accomplished what I have in the industry without the contributions of many others. I am especially grateful for the support and encouragement of my colleagues for over 22 years at J. J. Keller, as well as the staff and membership of SIIA. I am delighted to be able to continue my affiliation with SIIA and the content industry as a judge for the association’s CODiE Awards.”

Marne Keller-Krikava, President and Chief Executive Officer at J. J. Keller, commended Shaw for his lasting impact on the company and the industry.

“Webb was instrumental in championing and advancing the methodologies used to deliver content to our clients in our core markets of transportation, workplace safety, and human resources. For over 20 years, he strategically led the team of J. J. Keller® subject-matter experts who we fondly refer to as our ‘secret sauce,’” she said. “Additionally, Webb gained a great deal of credibility and respect internally given his commitment and actions to protect intellectual property. Externally, he has given back to the publishing industry by serving on numerous committees and advisory boards to advance research and delivery.”

Rustin Keller, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, echoed those sentiments.

“Having reported to Webb Shaw for the first nine years of my career at J. J. Keller, I can attest to his passion for content and editorial services,” he said. “Webb drove J. J. Keller to join SIIA, and led our efforts to reinvent our content management systems, oversaw the introduction of new Internet-based subscription products, and was the early promoter of a more formal model for the protection of our IP using many SIIA programs. I am ecstatic that a deserving leader such as Webb Shaw was selected for this prestigious award.”

Shaw received the Peter Jackson Innovation Award during SIIA’s annual CODiE Awards ceremony, held in conjunction with the ABM & Information Industry Summit in Washington, D.C. In addition to the award, a donation of $1,000 will be made in Shaw’s name to the Peter Jackson Fund for Keyboard and Guitar at the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis. The Peter Jackson Fund for Keyboard and Guitar recognizes the profound impact of music on Dr. Jackson’s life by providing music lessons for disadvantaged children.

Previous recipients of the award include James G. Kollegger, CEO of Genesys Partners, and Brewster Kahle, digital librarian and founder of the Internet Archive.
