Broiler industry shows improvement in Salmonella program results
As part of the Food Safety and Inspection Service’s (FSIS) Salmonella Verification Testing program, young chicken (broiler) slaughter establishments must meet a performance standard of 20 percent (12 positive samples out of 51). Based on test results, establishments are placed in Category 1, 2, or 3. Category 3 establishments exceed the standard for Salmonella in young chickens. This would be above 20 percent (13 or more positive samples out of 51).
July’s report reveals that there are no establishments listed in Category 3.
In addition, FSIS reports that 81 percent of broiler establishments are in Category 1 as of July 15, 2008 compared to the 35 percent that were in Category 1 in July 2006.
The agency believes that the broiler industry continues to move in the right direction and is progressing toward the 90 percent goal marked to meeting the Healthy People Goal of 2010.
